On April 17th-18th I attended the Bug-A-Paluzza,
two day VW show in Chattanooga, TN. This was a very fun show with plenty
of sunshine, warm temps, great people and lots of nice VWs. Herb Keedy
is the President of the Scenic City Volks Folks club which sponsored the
event. Herb and his wife Dee, along with the club really know how to put
on a great show and lots of fun was had by all in attendance. They
had over 180 registered show cars and plenty of vendors with all sorts
of parts. Herb is a Type II fan and his red/white '67 Deluxe bus was
displayed prominently next to a green and white formula vee vintage
racer that belonged to the DJ for the event. I also enjoyed the immense
amount of character, and stickers on the '62 DoubleDoor camper of Bill
and Jane Colville who came all the way from Las Cruces, NM. There
was also a beautiful '67 non-sunroof Deluxe bus that belonged to Dirk
Mooth parked next to the sweet turquoise and blue-white '66 Sundial of
Bart Dougherty. On Sunday they had their "hippy races" where
two teams push a VW bus across a short course to determine a winner.
"Homer the super-bus" went up against the very nicely restored
light blue '71 belonging to Fielding Clark. It only took three rounds of
racing to come up with a winning bus-push team. This event is also one
where you will see the stretched '81 Vanagon camper that belongs to Kyle
Guthrie of Ringhold, GA. Although this monstrosity looks like it is held
together with duct tape, it actually has lots of welding and fabrication
done underneath the bus to make it a solid unit. I sure would hate to
try and parallel park this thing though. The show facility had on-site
camping, plenty of room for tow vehicles, trailers, vendors and even a
stage. The food was EXCELLENT; a fully loaded and perfectly cooked
cheeseburger was only $2.25 and worth every penny. They even had an
on-site shower (with hot water!) that was made from a '68-'69 camper.
This show is definitely one worth attending if you are anywhere near
Chattanooga in mid-April. This was the 6th annual event and it promises
to get better and better each year. -Stan Wohlfarth
