General Information

Camp Abenaki is an outdoor environmental education day camp located at Windsor Lake in North Adams.  The camp is designed to provide campers with a variety of activities that challenge their skills, creativity and personal growth.

Our YMCA mission is to develop and offer programs that build a healthy body, mind and spirit for all.  The goal of YMCA Day Camping is to help campers grow mentally, physically, and spiritually, using a camp site, challenging activities, and a trained caring staff.  Using a natural camp site and providing challenging activities in both large and small group settings under the guidance of caring and well trained staff members, YMCA Day Camping gives children an experience that lasts a life time.

Objectives

  • Grow Personally - By helping individuals improve their self-esteem and self confidence.
  • Clarify Values - By practical, experiential education in decision making, in an environment that is, for most, new.
  • Develop Specific Skills - As day camp progresses, campers will develop skills related to program activities.
  • Improve Personal and Family Relationships - Helping campers understand the dynamics of relationships and to develop listening and communication skills.
  • Become Better Leaders and Supporters - Everyone participates in a variety of roles, and everyone is encouraged both to lead and to support.  Principles of leading and supporting are taught, practiced, and encouraged.
  • Appreciate Diversity - Through "camperships" and other outreach tools the camp brings in diverse members of the population.  The camp then becomes a place where people learn to recognize the worth of all individuals.
  • Have Fun - Fun makes the achievement of the other

Camp Abenaki is built on the YMCA tradition of camping which goes back 100 years.  The camp models the YMCA philosophy and values by incorporating environmental education, nature studies, recreation and adventure based counseling.
