Sheffield Historical Society

Educational Programming

The Sheffield Historical Society provides a broad range of educational programs and experiences for both children and adults. Some programs, such as "A Place in Time", are structured to address specific topics. Others, such as the Society’s monthly programs are each a unique topic designed to provide an introduction to a place, event, activity or person which lived/occurred literally in our backyard or has been the focus of recent attention.

Other events, such as the October Spirits of Sheffield Cemetery Walk or the December Holiday Stroll have become anticipated annual events for both children and adults. A spin-off of the annual cemetery walk is the cemetery tour for 5th graders where they have the opportunity to learn about cemetery architecture, encounter the spirits of Sheffield and Ashley Falls residents and do grave rubbings.

All of the Society’s education programs may be tailored for all ages as well as for home schooling modules. Teacher training programs are available. Please contact us at (413) 229-2694 or shs@sheffieldhistory.org for additional information.

The following is one example of an ongoing education program for children:

"A Place in Time" Experiential Learning
A three-phase program that focuses on children's ac
tivities in an historic environment while addressing topics in the Massachusetts "Social Studies Framework".

The three phases are:
Chores & Responsibilities such as shucking corn, doing laundry, and making candles.
Learning in a One-Room Schoolhouse including "Making Manners" or writing with a quill pen.
Pastime & Leisure offe
ring games, hoop races, and town ball.

In each of the three phases, specific activities designated for each grade level are integrated. Pre and post arrival materials are available to complement the education experience the student will receive on the Society campus. Each phase is approximately two to three hours and provided for a minimal fee.
