Change
About this concept called “change.” We could call it “restructuring” or “reorganizing” or “transitioning.” Whatever the title, the experience is bound to cause stress and even anxiety.
Does anyone else recall the difficulty that accompanied the “transition” from the 1928 BCP to our current version? I remember being very distressed by the changes in the familiar texts of the services. I had nothing positive to say about Rite II. I decided that I could coexist with Rite I but I was not happy about it. As it turned out, my major issue was that I had the 1928 services memorized. Fast forward thirty years. Would you care to guess who has Rite II, in all its forms, memorized? The very changes that so distressed me in the ’70s, seem almost inconsequential today.
Then there appeared the opportunity for me to become a Lay Reader/Chalice Bearer. I had qualms about the concept; women cooked and cleaned at the church. If they didn’t object to wearing a little black “beanie,” they could sing in the choir. They didn’t serve at the altar—ever. They never served on the Vestry and didn’t aspire to be Senior Warden. I needed several conversations with my Rector in order to accept the opportunity to be a part of the “transition.”
And how about the ordination of women? I wasn’t too sure about that until I learned that Susan Crampton was a candidate for Ordination. I’d known her for many years; we were members of the same parish. Our children were in Junior Choir together. She was, and still is, an intelligent, pleasant person who lives her strong faith. Once again, I found myself face-to-face with change. This time, I was a bit calmer about everything. When Katharine was elected our Presiding Bishop, I found myself excited and wishing that I, too, could wear a pink button that said, “It’s a girl!”
As we face the transitions and transformations ahead of us in merging our two parishes, I urgently suggest that each of us consider the changes that we have met with trepidation and come to embrace wholeheartedly. Change has brought us computers, television, telephones, electric lights, automobiles...
